10TH ANNUAL COSTCO SCHOLARSHIP FUND BREAKFAST
RAISES MORE THEN 2.7 MILLION FOR UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS
|
ISSAQUAH, WA – Costco scholars inspired a crowd of more than 800 at the 10th annual Costco Scholarship Fund Breakfast, which supports the Costco Scholarship Fund, raised more than 2.7 million for underrepresented minority students to attend Seattle University and the University of Washington.
Two current and four graduate scholarship recipients spoke. Seattle University student Emeera Mathew, a sophomore international studies and modern languages major, said, “I can truly be myself under the wings of the Seattle University and the Costco scholarship program. Thank you for making this possible.”
Marleen Martinez, a University of Washington graduate who now works at Lockheed Martin as a systems engineer (rocket scientist) on Orion also spoke. “Thank you for wanting me, for teaching me, for believing in me, for making my family’s life better, for making my life better, and for making the dreams of a small little 5-year-old Mexican girl come true. Gracias,” she said.
Since its inception in 2000, the Costco Scholarship Fund has raised more than 21.7 million and provided 880 scholarships. The Costco Scholarship Fund was created by Costco President and CEO Jim Sinegal and Costco Chairman of the Board Jeff Brotman to make it possible academically, financially and personally for underrepresented minority students to attend and graduate from Seattle University and the University of Washington.

Past Costco Scholarship Fund Breakfast Keynote Speakers
|
We were honored to have Ms. Erin Gruwell as our keynote speaker for the 2008 Costco Scholarship Fund Breakfast. In the fall of 1994, as an idealistic first-year teacher, Erin Gruwell, took on the challenge of a class of “unteachable, at-risk” students at a California High School. Fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, she encouraged students to rethink rigid beliefs about themselves and others, to reconsider daily decisions, and to rechart their futures.
With Erin’s steadfast support, her students shattered stereotypes to become critical thinkers, aspiring college students and citizens for change. Dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers”, they transformed their lives and even published a book. Their story inspired the motion picture “The Freedom Writers”. |
